Thai worker jailed for taking painkillers into UAE

A Thai worker was sentenced earlier this week to a one-year jail term in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for bringing painkillers and other medicines into the country, Thai Labour Ministry permanent secretary Jeerasak Sukonthachart said Wednesday.

The Thai mechanic, who has worked in the UAE for seven years, was arrested in possession of 195 paracetamol pills, 195 allergy pills and 30 muscle-relaxant pills at Abu Dhabi Airport in October after returning from a vacation in Thailand, Jeerasak said, citing a report by Banyat Siripreecha, the Thai labour attache in Abu Dhabi.
Jeerasak said he had asked Banyat to gather information on UAE regulations about prohibited medicines and other items so that Thai workers can be informed of them via the Department of Employment and job agencies before they are sent to the country.
The mechanic claimed he didn’t know about the UAE’s list of 374 prohibited medicines and other items.
