Death toll from southern crisis in August lowest in 10 years

The Deep South Surveillance Center said the number of deaths from the violence in deep southern provinces in August has been the lowest level in 10 years.

The past month saw 66 violent incidents in the three southernmost provinces including 22 shootings and 15 bomb explosions. Eighteen people were killed and 40 others were injured. The number was the lowest since January 2007.
More than 5,000 residents and authorities have been killed during the past ten years by insurgency that has erupted a decade ago in the three provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. The National Council for Peace and Order has announced that finding a sustainable solution to the violence in the area is one of its priorities.
