Activists propose additions to animal rights bill

ANIMAL RIGHTS activists yesterday urged a legislative drafting committee to include 20 more points in the Council of State's draft legislation on animal protection to ensure effective implementation of the law.

Piyawan Tangsakulsathaporn, founder of “A Call for Animal Rights Thailand” campaign, and other advocates submitted their petition at Government House along with 60,000 signatures to the committee’s representative, Wallop Tangkhananurak.
Piyawan, who has campaigned for the people’s sector version of this draft law via www.change.org/protectanimals, said the draft was in the second reading for content amendment, which should by completed by tomorrow.
The group wants 20 points, which were in the people-sector version of the draft law, to be included so as to ensure effective implementation, she said, adding that a law that could deal with wrongdoers seriously was necessary.
The 20 points include ban on slashing, beating, cutting, stabbing, burning or physical torture of animals leading to injuries, disability or death; ban on the illegal or inappropriate use of animals, especially when the animal is sick, old, heavily pregnant or disabled; ban on displaying to the public a disabled-born animal as holy; using an animal for begging on streets or for robbery; ban on inappropriate transportation of animals that would cause them suffering, injuries or death.
