Huge rise in discarded styrofoam pieces, PCD says

The number of used and discarded pieces of styrofoam in Thailand has grown significantly from 34 million in 2009 to 61 million a day in 2013, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD).

PCD director general Wichien Jungrungruang said such a huge increase reflects the fact that so many Thais, especially those in cities, put convenience, comfort and fast services before environmental care.
Wichien pointed out that it takes more than 100 years for styrofoam to decompose.
“In addition to environmental problems, it can also pose health threats. When exposed to food that is too hot, the styrene and benzene from the containers may leak into the food and harm consumers’ health,” he warned. Hence he said, consumers should use compostable plastic or containers made from cassava and sugarcane, or other eco-friendly containers.
He urged government agencies to set good examples for people to follow.
