Obec to cut days for extracurricular activities

THE Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) aims to cut the number of students' extracurricular activities time to no more than 20 days per academic year.

At present, students spend up to 84 days in extracurricular activities every year, as many organisations seem to believe the higher the |number of student participants in an event, the more successful the event.
Obec has of late found that students are often recruited to participate in reforestation activities,| green events, campaigns to combat the scourge of drugs, and other events.

No more than 20 days allowed
“The relevant organisations should combine extracurricular activities of a similar nature and such activities should not take more than 10 per cent of academic time,” Obec secretary-general Kamol Rodklai said yesterday.
He said given that each academic year had 200 days, the number |of days for extracurricular activities must not exceed 20.
He said Obec will have a meeting with many agencies on April 9 so as to explore ways to reduce the number of students’ extracurricular activities and see how to avoid students taking part in the activities during the month they also have to prepare for exams.
“After we conclude our plan, we will present it to Education Minister Narong Pipatanasai and seek his approval,” Kamol said.
So far, he said the Obec move would not affect activities that can enhance students’ skills such as in sports or music.
