Base medicine fees on factory costs, panel says

THE NATIONAL Drug System Development Committee agreed yesterday to require that rates for medicine sold at private hospitals be based on factory prices, following a wave of criticism that exorbitant prices were being charged.

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yuthavong said the hospitals could mark the drugs up with an appropriate profit margin later.
Meanwhile, the call for a central drug price-list – an issue that a panel has been set up to consider and implement at public hospitals as a model for private hospitals, clinics and pharmacies – Yongyuth said private hospitals had appealed against this decision and want to participate in this procedure.
