Malaysian police to investigate alleged plot to topple premier

Kuala Lumpur (dpa) - Malaysian police will investigate an alleged plot to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak, the national police chief said Monday.

The investigation comes as Najib faces his worst political crisis since coming to power, over the discovery of millions of dollars in his bank accounts.
Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar said there were at least three police reports filed over the alleged plot, prompting the police to start an investigation.
The police will take action if it discovers that anything unconstitutional has taken place, Khalid said.
On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he received information of a plot by a senior leader of ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and the opposition to oust Najib.
Several UMNO members, including particularly former strongman Mahathir Mohamad and sacked deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, have criticised the government for its failure to convincingly explain over 670 million dollars found in Najib's bank accounts.
Mahathir has been openly calling for Najib's resignation.
Ahmad Zahid said Muhyiddin was not involved in the plot.
The scandal hit the headlines early last month after the Wall Street Journal suggested that the money came from a state development fund.
