A fire broke out in the prayer room of the home of former prime minister General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh in Nonthaburi's Muang district early yesterday morning.

The fire occurred in the third-floor room at about 1.30am at Chavalit’s residence in Tambon Talad Kwan. It took five units of the fire brigade almost an hour to control the flames and stop the fire spreading to adjoining rooms.
A police investigation initially found that almost all of the ancient Buddha images in the room were damaged. Police are looking into the cause of the fire, but they believe that a short circuit may have been the culprit, or incense sticks left lighting and unattended.
Later yesterday, Chavalit arrived at the house but didn’t comment.
