Auditors get jail time for seminar that never took place

The Criminal Court on Monday sentenced a former auditor general of the Auditor General Office to two years in jail for negligence involving the organising of fake seminar.

The Court said Khunying Jaruwan Metaka and Kamphee Somjai, director of administration and human resource division had been found guilty of allocating Bt294,440 for a seminar in Nan province on October 31, 2003 that never took place.
The sum of money instead was allocated for officials who attended a royal Kathin ceremony.
The defendants were government officials and found guilty of the charges, so the Court sentenced them to two years in jail. However the Court noted that as senior government officials, they were entitled to ask for release on bail.
