Tuna factory labourers to strike work today

Hundreds of workers from Golden Prize Canning have gathered at Samut Sakhon’s labour protection and welfare office seeking help regarding unpaid wages, according to Andy Hall, an adviser to Migrant Worker Rights Network (MWRN).

The protest leader said all 1,400-plus workers, who are mostly Myanmar nationals, at the Mahachai tuna factory will go on strike after finishing work today, according to Hall.
“The workers announced that they will stop working until their complaints are properly managed by the Labour Department,” he said. Employees have claimed that Golden Prize Canning owes them unpaid wages. An earlier strike was organised in November while the MWRN helped to launch negotiations with the company. In December, the company terminated discussions with workers, saying it would only settle the dispute through the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare. The factory yesterday issued an order threatening layoffs and dismissals if any worker does not attend work without leave permission
