Re-elected TJA president warns of less media freedom

Re-elected TJA president warns of less media freedom

THE challenge to press freedom is still of concern this year, said the re-elected president of the Thai Journalists Association yesterday.

Wanchai Wongmeechai, a senior news editor at the Naew Na newspaper, was re-elected by TJA members at the association’s annual meeting to serve a second term.
He warned press freedom may be challenged further this year due to unsettled political circumstances.
He called on journalist fellows to unite to push for media reform and liberty.
Under his leadership last year, Wanchai led the organisation in dealing with the challenge of responding to orders implemented by the National Council of Peace and Order in relation to media performances, which are still in effect.
Wanchai vowed he would do his best as TJA president.
He urged his colleagues to reform media’s functions and fight for the industry’s rights and liberties.
At the annual meeting the TJA’s new executive was also appointed. Seven senior journalists who died last year were remembered at the meeting.
