Indonesian navy seizes Chinese fishing boat wanted by Interpol

Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy detained a Chinese-flagged fishing vessel wanted by Interpol, an official said Sunday.

Navy spokesman Commodore Edi Sucipto said two warships apprehended the fugitive vessel in Indonesian waters about 29 nautical miles off Lhokseumawe, in Aceh province.

"The Chinese vessel is wanted for illegal fishing in the Argentinian waters since February 29 and for illegal trade and slavery," Sucipto said.

News site Okezone.com reported that there were 25 Chinese and four Indonesian crewmen on board the vessel, which was directed to Belawan naval base in North Sumatra.

Indonesia has been redoubling its efforts to stop illegal fishing vessels, mostly foreign, in its waters.

In March, the government partially scuttled a Nigerian-flagged vessel that was on the Interpol's wanted list since 2013 for poaching in Antarctic waters.
