Quake of magnitude 5.3 in Hokkaido, no tsunami danger
Tokyo - An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 jolted Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Thursday, but there was no danger of a tsunami and no immediate report of injuries or major damage.
No problems were reported at any of the nuclear plants inthe area, although none of them are in operation.
Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas, which accounts for a fifth of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or larger.
