NRSA recommends easing of political ban

The political reform committee of the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) has suggested that the government allow political parties to carry out political activities and hold meetings.

Calls have been growing louder from political parties for the government to relax the prohibition of political activities and gatherings, which were banned by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) after the coup.
Seree Suwanpanont, NRSA political reform committee chairman, said his panel had recommended that the NCPO amend order No 57/2557 to allow political parties to operate openly so the government would be able to monitor their activities.
The recommendation was included in a report the committee presented yesterday to an NRSA meeting chaired by NRSA president Thinnapan Nakata.
Seree said the recommendation is in line with the NCPO’s policy to relax the political ban if the public accepts the draft in the August referendum.
The NRSA voted 140 to one, with 12 abstentions, to forward the report to the Cabinet, the National Legislative Assembly and the Election Commission.
NRSA member Sompong Sakawee, who chairs the subcommittee on the reform of political parties, also presented a section of the report regarding proposed changes to the political party system.
