Thailand cracks down on illegal logging as Unesco threat looms

A team of officials on Friday inspected impounded Siamese Rosewood logs worth hundreds of million of baht at Prachin Buri’s Thap Lan National Park.

The park is part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex (DPKY) World Heritage Site, which Unesco has threatened to place on its World Heritage in Danger list because of increasing pressure from illegal logging.
In response, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and related agencies have upped efforts to crackdown on illegal loggers. The efforts are also aimed at boosting compliance ahead of the Unesco World Heritage Committee’s upcoming 40th general assembly, which runs from July 10-20 in Istanbul.
