PM says no nomination of supreme patriarch until legal case cleared

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Monday that he will not forward the nomination of the new supreme patriarch for a royal appointment until all legal cases against the nominee have been cleared.

Prayut was referring to the pending nomination of Somdet Phramaharatchamangkhlachan or Somdet Chuang Varapunyo, the abbot of the Paknam Temple.
The abbot is facing charges of tax evasion over luxury cars in his temple’s museum. The case is pending an investigation by the Department of Special Investigation.
