Six killed as bus rams truck on rainy night

Six people were killed and 44 others injured - 12 seriously - when a Bangkok-bound inter-provincial bus slid over a road divider and crashed head-on into a 10-wheel truck in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Sikhiu district past midnight Friday.

The accident occurred between Km marker 103-104 on the Mittraphap Highway in Tambon Mittraphap around 1am, said Pol Lt-Colonel Wirat Thaksaniyom from Sikhiu Police Station.
Sikhiu Police Station superintendent Pol Colonel Chalermsak Suksamran said a probe was on into the cause of the crash, which occurred amid heavy rains. The bus heading to Bangkok reportedly slid across the lane divider and crashed into an oncoming truck.
Five people on the bus were killed – including bus driver Pichet Klinklang and four passengers (Prawit Saensri, Weerapol In-on, Suna Makhumlek and an unnamed Thai man) – as well as the truck driver, Thontham Hongwiangchan.
Of the 44 injured bus passengers, 12 were seriously hurt and were admitted to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. Four wounded victims were treated at Sikhiu Hospital while 28 were later allowed to go home.
