Muangthong United’s home tie against Port FC in the Toyota League Cup semifinals was marred by violent post-game clash between rival fans that reportedly left a dozen injured on Wednesday evening.

Holding a 2-1 lead from last month’s first leg, Thai League leaders Muangthong had Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva to thank for after he netted a second-half equaliser from the spot to secure a 1-1 draw and 3-2 aggregate victory over second-tier opponents.

After the game, it was reported that the violent clash occurred near the intersection outside Muangthong’s SCG Stadium, prompting more than 400 police officers to step in to restore the order. It took around an hour before the authority could put the situation under control.

The animosity between the two clubs’ fans has been festering for years since a mass brawl erupted during the King’s Trophy match featuring the two sides six years ago. In 2014 when Port still played in the top-flight division, they came to blows again at the end of the league fixture at Muangthong.
