Hong Kong stocks sank on Wednesday morning following a negative lead from Wall Street and on geopolitical worries, with Britain's shock decision to call a general election for June adding to European uncertainty.

The Hang Seng Index fell 0.60 percent, or 144.64 points, to 23,779.90.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 1.04 percent, or 33.14 points, to 3,163.57 and the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, fell 1.30 percent, or 25.29 points, to 1,921.13.
