Traffic eases as Ratchayothin ‘roundabout’ straightened

Central Bangkok traffic flow should improve now that the Ratchayothin intersection has been reopened to motorists while construction of a tunnel continues there.
With the tunnel now about 30 per cent complete, police reopened the intersection on Wednesday, a week earlier than scheduled.
The move puts an end to the “traffic roundabout” arrangement that had slowed movement since January 24. Vehicles are again passing straight through the intersection, although right turns remain prohibited to ease traffic volume on Phahonyothin and Ratchadapisak roads.
The tunnel under construction at the site of the demolished Ratchayothin flyover will facilitate the 19-kilometre Green Line Skytrain extension from Morchit to Saphan Mai and Khu Khod. It is expected to open in January 2019.
