Elephants likely killed man in Kanchanaburi sanctuary

A wild elephant apparently killed a man foraging for food in Kanchanaburi’s Sri Sawat district on Sunday night.

Kamonchai Chanthawong, 54, was found with a caved-in chest and broken legs and right arm among torn trees and elephant footprints at 8pm, a kilometre from Highway 3199 in Tambon Nong Ped.

A herd of 30 elephants were known to be roaming Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary while he was in the area, district police superintendent Pol Colonel Wanchai Onla-or said on Monday.

A medical examiner at Tha Kradan Hospital determined that Kamonchai had died from several severe blunt-force blows to the body.

The family accepted the findings and were permitted to collect the body for a funeral.
