Police say the shooting occurred in front of Ban Tha Rab Mosque in Muang district and identified the victim as Sama-ae Jehma, 45.
Pol Captain Sirisak Wangkulam said Sama-ae led a prayer and delivered sermons in the morning. As he then prepared to leave the mosque, someone opened fire on him.
“He was shot by war weapons. We are not sure how many attackers were involved in the attack,” Sirisak said.
Police will investigate as to whether the attack was related to the ongoing unrest in the deep South.
