Seaweed washed up on Patong Beach
Patong Municipality public works staff have been cleaning up piles of green seaweed on Patong Beach on Thursday.
This morning there was a line of green seaweed along 500 metres of the popular beach.
Arnon Poomduang, a jet-ski operator, said: “This is normal and happens every year around this time.
This year it is more than in the past years. There is lots of seaweed in the sea and is being washed up onto the beach. But many tourists are still enjoying the beach.”
Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup said: “This seaweed has been brought up by waves over the past four days. At this stage, we believe that this might be happening because of climate change.
“However, this seaweed has now been collected for testing to find other possible causes that may be responsible for bringing it up onto the beach.”
