Task force on sex offenders to be set up

Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsuthin said a task force on sex offenders would be set up, comprising personnel from the Department of Probation (DOP), Department of Corrections (DOC), and Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

Also, the Royal Thai Police will be asked to collect data and verify the whereabouts of all sex offenders, such as whether the offender is wanted, imprisoned, or close to being released, he said, adding “by doing so, people can be warned of the threats".
DOP, DOC, and DSI will jointly monitoring the offender's case and activities before a law is drawn up and enforced. “This operation will start early next year, ” Somsak said.
Regarding the problem of overcrowding in state prisons, the minister said bunk beds would be introduced instead of building new facilities.
“Currently, there were 134 prisons nationwide, sufficient for the number of prisoners being held at a time ” he said. “The bunk beds, when installed, can accommodate up to 100,000 prisoners at a cost of Bt200 million".
Drug users, he said, should instead be detained in hospitals but drug dealers and producers should be punished severely”.
