Shoppers’ delight: Chatuchak opening hours to be extended to 7pm

Chatuchak Weekend Market, which was reopened on Saturday from 5am to 6pm, will be allowed to stay open for another hour, Bangkok Governor Aswin Khwanmuang said during a market inspection on Sunday.

One of the most popular weekend markets in Bangkok had been shut down since March 22 under the government’s order to prevent Covid-19 from spreading.

“The extra hour of opening aims to accommodate shoppers, most of whom visit the market from the afternoon to the evening to avoid the heat,” he said.
“On Monday [May 11], the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will undertake a big clean-up to ensure the safety of shoppers and vendors, and paint guide marks on the floor in shopping areas to help people maintain social distance,” the governor said.

“All vendors and customers must wear sanitary or cloth face masks and are recommended to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 metres from each other. Furthermore, all public restrooms in the market will be cleaned every two hours and alcohol hand gel provided to visitors,” he added.
Vendors selling items including clothes have been instructed to limit the number of customers to five at a time in small shops and 10 in larger shops. Activities that involve crowds are banned at the market.
