Driver suspected of self-immolation in car

In a suspected case of suicide, a taxi driver immolated himself by setting his car on fire.

On Tuesday (June 30), Nong Khaem Police Station in Bangkok was informed about the suspected case of self-immolation.

The incident took place in a deserted area, on the opposite side of Thong Niam Temple in Nong Khaem district. The body of the dead man, identified as Krisanapong, 40, was found lying in the car. Police found a beer bottle, which could have been a container for oil, together with several evidence of documents and fuels.

Sommanat Phongam, the owner of a nearby café, informed that Krisanapong had parked his car around 1pm. Within 20 minutes, the owner heard a loud sound from the parked car, and then saw smoke and fire.

Initial inspection showed the dead man was a taxi driver. His last post on Facebook on April 5 had a photo of him beside his car with a caption that said: "Let’s fight Covid-19 together". Police found a photo of the driver with a boy aged around 12 or 13. Most of his friends’ comment on social media encouraged him to fight for a better life.

Police will summon his family members and other known persons to investigate the case further.
