Sunday storm wreaks havoc in Chumphon

A storm has damaged several buildings, plantations, large trees as well as a cell-phone tower in Chumphon province.

Yongyut Tawitchasri, chief of Phra Rak subdistrict in Chumphon’s Phato district, said on Sunday (August 2) that the damage to the cell-phone tower had made mobile phones unusable throughout the subdistrict.
“Monks from Ban Mong temple have reported that the storm had uprooted a large teak tree, which fell on a prayer building, 12 bathrooms and a bell tower,” he said. “Early estimation of damage is around Bt500,000, but luckily there are no reports of injuries.”

Meanwhile, Chalit Klinhuan, 36, a durian farmer in Pha Rak subdistrict, said that the storm had damaged most of the durian trees in his plantation. “The fruits were all knocked out from the trees when they were just a week away from being harvested. This storm has cost me more than Bt100,000 of investment. It is the worst I’ve seen in six years.”

Phato district chief Thitiwat Boonkit added that the storm on Sunday had resulted in around an hour of electricity blackout in four subdistricts but officials have already fixed it, however the cell phones of all operators are still unusable in Phra Rak subdistrict. There are no reports of casualties.
