National arts and crafts centre archives traditional know-how to preserve Thai culture
The Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (SACICT) has entered the second phase of its “SACICT Archive” system, in which artwork is collected from across the country and presented digitally at its Arts and Crafts Knowledge Centre.
The aim of this project is to conserve knowledge in up to 10 fields of arts and craft, such as basketry, woodworking, metalware, leatherwork etc.
Pornphon Akathaporn, SACICT director, said: “Access to this knowledge is limited as there are no records. Several pieces of information have also been separated without being categorised to make them easier to understand, and craftsmen have died without passing on their knowledge.” 
Hence, he said, SACICT aims to conserve local art and traditions in the country and preserve Thai culture.
