Ransomware that attacked Saraburi Hospital ‘came from Europe’

The Digital Economy and Society Ministry said that the ransomware attack on Saraburi Hospital’s database had come from Europe.

Pol Maj-General Phanthana Nuchanart, chief of the anti-fake news centre, said the ransomware had been forwarded several times until it arrived in the Saraburi Hospital’s system, adding that the hacker did not demand cash yet.

“Government technology experts are investigating and collecting evidence about the attack, such as its origin and operation,” he said.

“We found that some hospitals and companies had been hacked in a similar manner and some had already paid to have their data restored. However, we cannot confirm the time, the hacker or the number of victims.”

He added that this is the first time that the Royal Thai Police is handling a case like this.

“From now on, police and related agencies will have to cooperate to boost efficiency to prevent cyberattacks,” he said.

He added that the police technology crime investigation department has been helping supress cybercrimes, which are becoming more complicated and frequent.
