CCSA orders urgent vaccination for Klong Toei residents

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Monday issued an urgent order for vaccination of people residing in and near slums in Bangkok’s Klong Toei district to prevent further spread of the virus, Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Monday.

The CCSA reported on Sunday that 304 people residing in or near slums in Klong Toei district had tested positive for Covid-19. Of these, 193 people are residents of the 12 slums in Klong Toei, while 111 patients reside in condominiums or apartments adjacent to these slums.

“Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who chaired the CCSA meeting on Monday, ordered the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to start the vaccination on Tuesday at two locations in Klong Toei: Tesco Lotus Rama IV and Klong Toei Witthaya School from 1pm,” said Aswin.

“We expect to vaccinate 1,000 people on the first day, and about 2,000-3,000 in the following days.”

Aswin added that the BMA would also launch active testing in Klong Toei areas at up to 1,000 people per day until May 19.

“We expect to test up to 20,000 people living in Klong Toei from the estimated total of 90,000 people in the areas.”

Aswin added that controlling the outbreak in Klong Toei would be harder compared to the case of the Samut Sakhon seafood markets and nearby communities.

“The areas of Klong Toei slums are much larger and have a large population. Therefore, people must further protect themselves by refraining from leaving their homes unnecessarily,” he added.
