Security team foils bid to smuggle illegal Myanmar migrants into Thailand

A team of military and police officers swooped down on a Thai trafficker as he tried to smuggle 11 Myanmar nationals into Thailand via Kanchanaburi’s Sai Yok district on Monday.

Of the 11 migrants, five were hiding inside a 1,000-litre plastic tank, two each in the two 200-litre barrels, while the other two were sitting out front with the driver.

The migrants said they had been picked up in the Dawei area by a Thai, who had been paid 20,000 to 25,000 baht for the job.

Suspect Pradit Klahan, 62, who lives in Sai Yok district, said he was given 1,500 baht for driving the migrants from Thung Chang village to an intersection in the Ban Kao area in Kanchanaburi’s Muang district. The 11 Myanmar nationals were to be taken to Samut Sakhon for jobs

All suspects were screened for their body temperature before being sent to Sai Yok Police Station for legal action.

Prasit has been charged with concealing and helping illegal migrants evade arrest. The 11 Myanmar nationals were charged with illegal entry as well as violating the Communicable Disease Act and the provincial emergency decree to contain Covid-19 infections.
