Thousands people in Yangon and the second largest city of Mandalay held street protest days ago demanding more electricity supply in the cities. They faced power cut off hours a day. Many protesters reportedly were taken into police custody for questioning.
The authority blamed the rebellious Kachin Independent Army for the blast to electricity poles and towers which supply 230 KV power from Shweli power station, situated somewhere between Kachin and Shan States (North).
“After repairing these towers, 200 megawatt of electricity supply would be back to normal,” U Aung Khine said and added “Yangon will get back its 100 megawatt diverted earlier to substitute other areas.”
In the difficult time of generating less power, 11 mobile generators for Yangon, 20 for Mandalay, five for Pyay and two for Monywa have been purchased to help to provide drinking water and night power supplies.
Moreover, plan is underway to buy six units of 2 megawatt generators made by Caterpillar Co., Ltd of the United States of America. These generators will arrive in Myanmar within one week. Upon arrival of the generators, power will be mainly distributed to necessary places.
Six units of 1 megawatt diesel-fuelled generators will be purchased from Singapore and arrangements are being made to arrive in Myanmar within one week. General Electric Co., Ltd is also planning to buy two 25 megawatts gas turbines.
