According to the tentative schedule, Thein Sein will arrive in Thailand at 3pm on June 15.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was awaiting the official schedule as Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul was still coordinating the details with the Myanmar government, the source said.
The foreign minister, who visited Myanmar last week, had been assigned by the prime minister to help “create a good understanding” with the Myanmar government after Thein Sein had twice cancelled his official visit. The Myanmar president was to meet Yingluck on June 1 during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Bangkok. He then rescheduled his visit to June 4 and 5, but again cancelled.
Thein Sein was said to be dissatisfied with the high-profile welcome that Myanmar’s leading opposition figure Aung San Suu Kyi received while in Thailand to attend the WEF. In a bid to appease the Myanmar president, the Thai government explained that it gave Suu Kyi no special treatment and that the welcome was extended by the private sector.
The Government House source said Thein Sein’s visit on Friday would affect the prime minister’s plans. She was scheduled to tour many provinces from Monday to Friday to follow up on the government’s flood-prevention plans. Yingluck would have to shorten her trip so she could be back in Bangkok on Friday to welcome Thein Sein, according to the source.
