70,000 still living in Rakhine camps

More than 70,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are currently living in 50 refugee camps in Rakhine state, which witnessed a series of violent clashes between two groups in June, according the report of UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian

The camps are scattered over Sittwe, Kyauktaw and Maungdaw townships.
Dozens had died and thousands have been displaced in the western state following clashes between the Bengalis and the ethnic Rakhines. Although the situation has improved to some extent, tension still exists between the two communities.
According to the UNOCHA report, the number of refugee camps there declined as the government merged small refugee camps with 15 key IDP camps. Though most of the schools in Sittwe and Yathe Taung are opening, a few ones in Kyauktaw and Maungdaw still remain closed.
Malteser International, an international non-government organization, is providing mental cares to 375 children at eight IDP camps in Sittwe Township.
