No rate cut yet for cellphone service

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has yet to set a date for cutting rates for mobile phone service, following recent comments by Deputy Minister Win Than that price cuts would be announced "soon" and that they would make the cost "

“We are planning to sell mobile phones at cheaper prices. We will announce to the public when we set the prices,” Win Than told Parliament. “The price will be much lower than the current price,” he said in response to questions from opposition MP Dr Myat Nyanna Soe on Tuesday.
The ministry currently sells GSM mobile service at 200,000 kyats (Bt6,900) and WCDMA service at 250,000 kyats. Rumours of imminent rate cuts began circulating in early January, but the January 16 announcement that Minister Thein Tun had resigned raised doubts that rate cuts would occur soon.
