The ceremony will take place at the Thanh Thuy-Nam On border crossing between Vietnam’s Nghe An province and Laos’ Borikhamxay province, the Laotian minister of foreign affairs said following talks between the two ministers.
Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and his delegation paid a three-day working visit to the northern Lao province from June 14-16 in response to an invitation from his Laotian counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith, who is also deputy prime minister.
Both sides agreed to work together to prepare for the July 9 celebration, which will be attended by high-ranking officials from both sides, the ministry said in a press release.
Laos and Vietnam began the project to restore and add new markers in 2008, and it has been hailed as a success by both countries.
During their talks, the two ministers reviewed the implementation of border regulations as well as the border demarcation and restoration project.
The ministers also discussed ways to address issues occurring along their shared border. They touched upon preparations to sign a bilateral agreement on solutions to address the inappropriate emigration and illegal marriage of citizens living in the border area.
Other topics tabled included the development and upgrade of border checkpoints, the press release said.
In addition, the two ministers discussed preparations for a visit to Laos by Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang, and a visit to Vietnam by the Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and Lao President Choummaly Sayasone in the near future.
