Suu Kyi discusses federal union with ethnic leaders

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi held discussions with ethnic leaders at her residence this week about the establishing of a federal government and amending the 2008 Constitution.

Tuesday’s meeting was attended by members of the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA). Among the issues discussed were questions of regional autonomy, amendment of the Constitution and the establishment of a federal system of government. However, many were sceptical as to how this would be achieved.
“A federal system must be put in place in Myanmar, but we have little hope of seeing immediate changes, so this should be set up gradually. The government has told us that the peace conference to be held in Nay Pyi Taw to establish a ceasefire is more important,” said Aye Tha Aung, chairman of the Rakhine League for Democracy.
Others attending the meeting were Khun Tun Oo of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, Naing Ngwe Thein of the Mon Democracy Party, Pu Kyint Shin Htan of the Zome Democracy Federation and Saw Harry of the Kayin National Democracy Federation.
