Ethnic groups must reaffirm peace deal: govt

A plan to sign a nationwide ceasefire must first approve previous agreements with ethnic armed groups, said Aung Min, Minister for the President's Office.

The Minister said that signing a state-level ceasefire, banning the carrying of arms between areas and signing a peace deal in the presence of international organisations were all points that needed to be re-approved to continue to build trust between parties.
“Peace will be achieved soon. Although I cannot tell exactly about the time when peace will be achieved, it will come true. I am determined to succeed in the peace implementation process,” said Aung Min.
He went on to say that the 19 MPs on the peacemaking committee had not reported on their progress to Parliament, and that many MPs felt disappointed by this.
Amending the 2008 Constitution to devolve more power to regions, as demanded by the armed ethnic groups, would be decided by Parliament, said Aung Min. The parliamentary peacemaking committee could only give suggestions when necessary,” he added.
