Yangon in danger of becoming an international hub for narcotics

Yangon Region could become a major market for narcotic drug trading because of "greedy" dealers, according to an official from the Yangon's Anti-Narcotics Force.

“Ten percent of the country’s population lives in Yangon Region. There is an international airport and ports which are mainly used in foreign trade. Compared with others, Yangon is a special region where narcotic drugs can come in and out [of the country],” said Deputy Police Major, Khin Maung Thein of Yangon (West) Anti-Narcotics Force.
This year has already seen the arrest of many narcotics and amphetamine users in Yangon Region, say officials.
“As for our anti-narcotic task force, we are not yet able to successfully combat drugs, with only 500 police in Yangon Region. So, information is the vital key to discovering illegal drugs,” added Khin Maung Thein.
After its 15-year strategy aimed at total elimination of narcotics failed, the government has extended the strategy for another five years.
Last year, over 5,700 people were arrested as part of 4,000 drug cases.
