Roundabouts in Yangon, such as the famous U Wizara monument, are important sites for Yangon residents and the local government is currently doing a survey to assess the volume of daily traffic around them.
“We have no plan to remove the roundabouts, which are ancient heritage for us, but we are conducting the survey only to try to reduce the traffic congestion at roundabouts by installing small traffic lights,” the transport minister said.
Traffic jams are a regular nightmare in Yangon as road infrastructure struggles to catch up with the increasing number of cars on the road. The roundabouts often have cues of cars on all sides jostling to get around.
