Charter rewrite for public empowerment: Suu Kyi

Opposition leader dismisses claim that her party will benefit from the change

National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has dismissed the allegation that her party would benefit from the Charter change, saying people empowerment is the actual goal.
Suu Kyi was speaking on Friday at the third meeting of her party’s central committee where she gave a speech.
“Some people accused the NLD of seeking party’s interest. And this is a thought. The accusers are predicting that the NLD would win the 2015 elections by changing the Charter. The way they think is highly questionable. Our effort to amend the constitution is aimed at the freedom [for] the people to choose what they want,” Suu Kyi said.
“It is particularly interesting why the accusers forecast the NLD victory in the 2015 elections by amending the Charter and why they think so.
“What we want to change [in] the charter is meant for the people to freely choose what they like.
“We would like the people to have power over the freedom of choice. It does not matter whoever wins the election, but public empowerment is an essential prerequisite.
“That I would like to ask is why they foretell we will win if we have merely thought we are trying to win the election.
“Public relations is of great importance. It does not matter any election, any campaign or whatever. The people cannot be fooled through misleading ties. We, the NLD, have never fooled the people. We should express goodwill towards the state. We are responsible for rooting in [a] democratic system. The most important thing is goodwill towards the state.
The success of democracy leads to the development of the state.
The world history has proved that. It is an undeniable fact that democracy is a system capable of benefiting most of the people. If we have goodwill towards the state, we are responsible for trying to deepen [the] democratic system in our country.”
The NLD, in collaboration with the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society, has launched public rallies on Charter change in all parts of the country.
The campaign aims to collect enough signatures to show the public supports the push for amending the military-drafted constitution.
