President: Myanmar must not force democracy

Myanmar has been very distant from democracy for a long time and the present democratic reform process cannot be carried out by force and pressure, President Thein Sein said at an event in Bago Region.

State media reported the president’s comments at a rural development event, where he said that his administration has transformed sectors such as politics, economics and the administrative system with great care.  Thein Sein said that it is clear that some countries “go over their limits in making the transformation to democracy and face instability and chaos”.
He added that the transformation carried out by the government was in the public’s desire, adding to stability, rule of law and order and uplifting the economic lives of the people; as well as encouraging a peace process to end the ethnic armed conflict.
