“We have been doing research around Eimawboon mountain and have detected large-scale wood smuggling into China. In the area, there are government soldiers, Kachin Independence Army, border guards and militia men. Despite their presence, no one is taking action against the wood smugglers. These groups have to take full responsibility,” said retired professor of Botany Nyo Maung.
The Eimawboon forest reserve is located in northeastern Kachin state, covering an area of 640,000 acres and bordering China in the east.
The study shows that the Eimawboon evergreen forest can absorb 21,500 kg of carbon dioxide per year.
