War-era bomb kills two in Vietnam

Two men died when trying to extract explosives from a war-era bomb in central Vietnam, police said yesterday.

The men, aged 41 and 25, found the bomb in a forest and carried it to the backyard of a forest ranger to open, said Nguyen Quang Tuyen, deputy police chief in Son Hoa District, Phu Yen province.
While sawing it open, the bomb exploded, killing them instantly, he said. Following decades of war, Vietnam’s bomb-disposal agency estimates that 800,000 tonnes of bombs, landmines and artillery remain buried in uncleared areas totalling 6.6 million hectares.
