Monk nabbed over rape of teenage girl

A Buddhist monk in Cambodia was arrested and defrocked for raping a 14-year-old girl who had gone to him to be blessed and cured of headaches and breathing problems, a media report said yesterday.

“The girl has strong beliefs and her family trusted the monk and did not expect anything like this,” local police chief Chum Choeun was quoted as saying by The Cambodia Daily.
He said the monk, Ev Ny, 33, had admitted the crime. The teenager’s family in Takeo province had taken her to the monk, and asked him to perform a “water blessing” ritual to cure her illness, Chum Choeun said. Ev Ny was known for offering water blessings that he said combated the effects of black magic.
He then took the girl to a private room and raped her.
The girl’s parents only found out later when they took her to hospital for her injuries.
