Democracy activist faces more charges

Hlaing Township court in Yangon West District last Thursday filed more charges against Htin Kyaw, founder of the Movement for Democracy Current Force (MDCF), who was earlier sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison under Section 505 (B) of the Pena

Htin Kyaw was charged with violating of Section 18 of the Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Procession Act and Section 19.
In March, two protesters including Htin Kyaw staged a protest over land grab at 6-ward in Mayankone Township.
“We staged the protest against the land grab after we got the approval from the police. Now, they [authorities] want to charge us with violating Sections 18 and 19,’’ said Htin Kyaw.
At the first trial, the court granted bail to two protesters and the second trial will be held on December 29.
While leaving the court, the members of MDCF chanted anti-government slogans.
Htin Kyaw had already been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison by 12 township courts. All the sentences were handed down this year, following a contentious announcement on January 1 by President Thein Sein that all political prisoners in Myanmar had been freed.
