The regional government has allocated Ks 54.35 billion to build flyovers at 8-mile junction, Tamwe junction and Kokkine junction in the 2015-16 fiscal year, of which Ks 22.5 billion will be used for Tamwe junction, Ks 16.45 billion for 8-mile junction and Ks 15.4 billion for Kokkine junction.
The regional government plans to hold an open tender at the end of March. The construction is expected to take place during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. To ensure the best results, the government will consult with engineers, architects and legal advisors.
“The call for bids will be announced through state-owned newspapers at the end of this budget year,” an official from the regional government said.
In previous flyover projects, Shwetaung Co was commissioned to build the Hledan flyover; Capital Development Co to build the Shwegondine flyover; and FMI Co to build the Bayintnaung flyover. Last year, Capital Development Co was commissioned again to build the Myaynigone flyover.
Many criticised the government for granting two flyovers projects to Capital Development Co. Critics also said future projects should be granted to more experienced contractors.
Since 2011, city authorities have been in the process of building flyovers to alleviate the worsening traffic conditions in Yangon, Myanmar’s commercial hub.
To reduce traffic in Yangon, the upcoming flyovers will be 54 kilometres long and are expected to take drivers around the city in 30 minutes.
“There will be charges for using these roads. Those who don’t want to be stuck in traffic can go through the flyovers,” said an official from Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).
Both domestic or foreign companies are eligible to get permission to do the project.
The flyovers will be constructed in line with international standards, said the official from the YCDC.
The regional government also plans to open soon a high-rise car parking building that can accommodate 450 vehicles near Mingalar and Mingalarmon markets.
The construction of car parking is near a newly extended Mingalar market being built near Mingalarmon market, according to the Markets’ Department under the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).
“The project will include not only shops but also high-rise car parking for 450 vehicles,” said an official from the Markets’ Department.
Upon completion, vehicles owners using the parking building will have to pay parking fees.
Although YCDC has opened tenders for the construction of car parking garages on 45th Street in Botadaung Township near the junction of Hledang and Htantapin streets in Kamaryut Township, it still hasn’t chosen the company that will undertake the construction.
