“We mainly focused on cooperation in future tasks. We have not reached an agreement yet, but these points will be on the UNA’s agenda. The NLD’s central executive committee (CEC) will also discuss these topics,” said Sai Nyunt Lwin, the general secretary of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD).
“The NLD’s ethnic relations committee will give its recommendations to the central executive committee. If both give the green light, we can go ahead [with this collaboration],” said Tun Tun Hein, a CEC member.
UNA was formed after the 1990 election and is considered one of the most influential and experienced political alliances operating in the country. The UNA encompasses a varied spectrum of ethnic political parties.
Aung San Suu Kyi previously met with top leaders of the UNA last December.
“Just as the country’s top leaders are considering holding a four-party meeting, a six-party meeting and a 12-party meeting, our organisation is also full of activity, and we don’t waste any time. We want [the election] to arrive without any complications. We are to reduce hostilities. Aung San Suu Kyi agrees on that. Now is the starting point,” Sai Nyunt Lwin said.
The meeting was attended by Aung San Suu Kyi and seven CEC members, including Tun Tun Hein, Nan Khin Htwe Myint and Khin Htay Kywe, from the NLD side. On the UNA side, Sai Nyunt Lwin, the general secretary of the SNLD, Pu Gin Kan Hlyan, the general secretary of Zomi Democracy Federation, Dr Min Soe Lin, the general secretary of the Mon National Party and Mann Kyaw Nyein, the general secretary of the Karan National Party, all attended.
