The e-visa system was launched on September 1, 2014, and made available to citizens of 41 countries, most of which are in Asia. The list of countries covered has been extended to 97 countries.
After the US, the e-visa system is most heavily used by tourists from the UK, France and Germany, according to the department.
The e-visa is only available to tourists. Visitors entering the country for business or other reasons are excluded.
The e-visa is valid for three months, starting from the approved date. It allows 28 days in Myanmar per arrival. The cost of the visa is currently set at US$50.
