Restaurants accused of dodging tax

Many restaurants in Yangon have failed to put commercial stamps on bills, according to customers.

A resident of Kamayut Township said that most restaurants did not stamp the bills. Even if customers asked, the restaurants might put two Ks50 stamps on the bills if the tax amounts exceeded Ks300.
Another resident said that a restaurant he went to put did not put any stamp on the bill, though it specified that he paid Ks700 tax for the Ks10,000 meal.
The Internal Revenue Department (IRD) has urged customers in Yangon Region to inform the department if restaurants failed to stamp their bills. An official said that once a new tax law is enforced, those restaurants would be sued. The bill awaits President Thein Sein’s signature.
